Alta Tetons

I was coming back from Tetonia this afternoon and noticed tourists pulling over on Hwy 33 to take pictures of the Grand Tetons. Having lived here a while, I’m used to gorgeous views, but they were looking pretty fine today.

I’m not a tourist, I’m the local bus driver, and I wanted pictures so I detoured east on Hastings Lane right up to Stateline Rd in Alta, Wyoming. As long as I stay on the west side of the road, our insurance is intact. And I have a zoom lens :-)

Foliage

Remember those trees I got lost in when I went to climb the Pinnacle? Here they are:

Packsaddle Road

We took an early morning drive on Packsaddle Road this morning. I normally don’t get up into the Big Holes this far when I’m driving the bus.

Great Teton views up here, and the road crosses over the Teton River.

Here’s a video of the Teton River that I shot this morning. No cars came by, the birds and cows were chatting, and it was a beautiful and peaceful moment.

Sit back and turn on your speakers. The video ends with a splash :-)

Burn Area

Sometimes trash can be art. I found this spot in Victor, south of the bike park.

This is where the city brings stuff they want to burn. Burning is a cultural thing around here. They burn trash, leaves, crops and whatever they feel like.

No burn bans here.

Now the metal stuff, I really don’t know…

Piper Deck

Our little princess Piper, lounging around on our deck.
Isn’t she a sweetheart!
A real laid back kitty cat…
I think she’s about ready to crash.
Hmmm, maybe not.
Uh-oh, I know this look. My hand is in trouble.
Fangs and claws. She loves me, really. Owwww…
Yea, the deck is shot. Four feet of snow for six months out of the year takes it’s toll.

Next spring, new deck!

The Pinnacle

This little hill is off of Fox Creek Canyon Rd, halfway between Driggs and Victor.

I went there this morning to climb it, and get some shots from the top. Unfortunately, I got lost in the trees and had to turn around. Darn!

Victor Bike Park

This park was conceived by four Victor cyclists (Dave Byers, Scott Fitzgerald, Jannine Fitzgerald and Dave Bergart), constructed mostly with private donations in just four days, and opened to the public in July, 2009.

It really helped that Scott owns a bike shop in Jackson, and he’s the mayor of Victor. :-)

Driveway Sunrise

As Jack was warming up in the driveway this morning, I took these photos of a particularly stunning sunrise over the mountains.

It’s good to live here!

Ranch Sign

There are a lot of decorative property entrances around the valley. This is one of my favorites, just south of Tetonia.

Art Boxes

I’ve been watching our local artists painting terrific art on utility boxes, all summer long.

As major construction roared around them, they breathed the fumes, and contributed their talents to our community.

A contest is being sponsored by the Teton Arts Council, and voting is going on now through Oct, 31.   Evaluate these works of art, and cast your vote Here!

If you would like to see them in person, here’s a Map. Click the markers for info…

1 – Bugs & Blooms – Jaine Lewis

2 – Loose Moose – Sue Tyler / Kathy Stillman

3 – Birds of the Seasons – Helen Miller

4 – Outhouse – Teri Furniss

5 – Swans – Julia Hibbert

Piper

Our baby: Queen of the house, guardian of the yard, and don’t you dare mess with her…

Piper was an abandoned kitten, rescued at one week old by a girl named Megan. She was bottle fed, fixed and tagged, and grew to be a great cat.

Eyes Of God

I took this shot yesterday, west of Victor. Looking at it last night, I really liked it, but the clouds were over-saturated. So, I ran it through my paint processor…

This is the un-retouched result. It looks like the eyes of God, gazing over the valley.

Street Lights

I’ve been complaining about the construction here all summer. I knew it would eventually wind down, and I’ve been looking forward to the results.

Well, here we go. The sidewalks are looking great, parking is in place and the streets seem wider. More posts to follow on that front…

The thing that caught my eye today is the fact that we have new street lights.

I watched a crew move from light to light, installing two extensions, each pointing towards the sidewalk. These can be used for anything the city wants. Pretty cool!

First Snow

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Gentle mistresses and most distinguished gentlemen:

Let it be known that on this day, October the sixth, in the year of our Lord two-thousand and eleven, the first snow fall of the season has occurred in the major mountain range in western North America known as the Rocky Mountains.

Note From Brian

Received a rare email from my nephew Brian this morning, with photos. He, Andrea, and little Anika moved to the Czech Republic (Andreas home) a while back.

In the birthday photo below we have Andrea on the left, Anika with book, and I’m guessing mom, grandmother and sister…

Classic Andrea and Brian shot. :-)
Must be Andreas dad.
I’m guessing the sisters baby? Hmmm, I wonder how close I am.

Update: Brian emailed me, and said I was right on all assumtions :-)
