Dirty Potatoes

For you Not in Idaho folks, our area is one of the premier seed potato locations in the country and many new crops are created from the potatoes grown here. They’re stored in giant silos all winter and then trucked out to farms around the U.S. in the spring.

This truck is sitting on a relatively small farm at the base of the Big Hole mountains and I was struck today by the amount of dirt mixed in with the potatoes. It dawned on me that these were the farmers seeds from last year, sitting in his own private silo, ready to be used in planting his crop this year. He’s not selling them so who cares if his own dirt is mixed in, and it probably protects them from the cold winter.
