New Holland

I’ve been noticing this New Holland hay rig just south of 5000 for quite a few days now. It hasn’t moved at all and that bale of hay has just been sitting there in the stuck position. I feel sorry for the machine because as humans, we can all relate…

My Drive

I’ve mentioned before that my drive to work is 2.3 miles and the various seasons always provide different views and challenges. Spring brings herds of deer and an occasional moose, Summer has crowds of hippies heading up the hill to the music festivals at Targhee and Winter just brings bad-ass slick roads.

My favorite time to drive this commute is the Fall. The road is dry, the traffic is light, and the trees come alive with color. Here’s looking towards work, and then back home, from the same spot while standing in the middle of the road.

The Tip

As the little old lady going to senior meals boarded the bus today she reached into her coat pocket to retrieve my tip. Normally it’s a Tootsie Roll but this time it was a small candy, a cookie, and a mostly consumed piece of black licorice. I tried to politely decline but she insisted. I did have to draw the line at the used tissue that accompanied the tip out of her pocket.

I asked her how old she was and she said 95. (Yea, I know, but old people don’t mind telling you their age.) I’ve been driving this lady for going on seven years now and I’ve watched her faculties decline, but she’s not giving in to it. She’s a proud matriarch of the Valley, still living in and maintaining her own house.

And she’s a great tipper! (It was mighty tasty ;-)

Xbox One

I’ve never bought a modern gaming console. As Riley was growing up I always got the latest and greatest computer hardware and graphics processors for my builds and he played Windows based computer games.

Now I’m out here in the Idaho sticks with a nice Samsung LCD flat-screen and a seemingly insatiable craving for the latest and greatest toys.

The new Xbox comes out in November. I figure by mid December it should be readily available and I’m getting one. I make this decision based on the following parameters:

  • I’m back to work and I can now start throwing a few bucks into the Xbox jar.
  • I’m not a game player, I’m a computer programmer, but the thought of kicking some punk little ass globally across my high-speed internet kind of appeals to the grumpy old man side of me.
  • Steph appreciates when I hunker down in my office to write code because she can get a lot of stuff done around the house. Now she’ll never see me…
  • It will prevent me from devoting massive amounts of brain energy into code projects that nobody understands, or uses.

btw: Do you know what happened 163 years ago this summer? California became a state! The people had no electricity, the state had no money, almost everyone spoke Spanish, and there were gunfights in the streets. So basically nothing has changed, except the women had real boobs and the men didn’t hold hands.
