Munchkins

I picked up a bunch of little people today at Reach For Rainbows daycare in Driggs, along with a few adults, for a field trip down to the Cosmic Apple in Victor.

I got to know Teacher Cindy earlier this year while driving her to the Community School for a summer job. She mentioned she had this daycare going on and wanted to do some field trips to our local farms and well, here we are.

The munchkins were adorable, very well behaved, and I look forward to the next trip. Click the photo below for some shots back at the daycare, after the farm.

Grandfathers

My father, Eugene Thomas Riza, was from Cleburne Texas. He married my mom after returning from WW-2 as a Navy vet who survived Pearl Harbor. They created me and my older brother Dana, then divorced shortly after, otherwise, I would be a Texan and the world I know would not exist.

My grandfather on my mothers side, James Lloyd King, was from Missouri and was a great inventor. He created several ore refinery plants in Nevada, started one of the first drive-ins in the country down in Arizona, had several patents, and was a gold miner.

I just came across this old obituary of my dads father and I was struck by his entrepreneurial spirit. Creativity is obviously in my blood…

CLEBURNE TIMES-REVIEW - January 4, 1968 - RETIRED MANUFACTURER DIES WEDNESDAY NIGHT
T.H. Riza, 77, of 1129 Alvarado Street, died Wednesday night at his home. He was a native of Somervell County and had been a resident of Cleburne for 60 years. He was a member of the Eastern Heights Baptist Church. Riza for many years operated a feed mill. He invented several machines used in the mixing and preparation of livestock feed. To manufacture one of these, a molasses mixing machine, he founded the Riza manufacturing Company, which was later purchased by his brother, Sam Riza and other members of the family and has expanded to an organization doing business internationally. In 1913 Riza was married to Miss Eugene Simpson. She outlives him. Other survivors are four sons; R.J. and Jack Riza of Cleburne, Gene of Dallas, and John Riza of Arlington. Four daughters; Mrs Alberta McKinney of Fort Worth, Mrs Irene Mitchell of Blum, Mrs Doris Moore of Arlington, and Mrs Marie Jones of Cleburne. Two brothers; Sam of Cleburne and Albert Riza of Gregg County. Thirty two grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren also survive. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Dillon-Emmert Chapel with Rev. George Willis officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Fired Pit

The pit fired up in a heartbeat last night using the remnants of our now dead newspaper, the Valley Citizen. It roared through the evening under a brilliant Teton Valley sky and died out at midnight with a small splash of water. The photos await below…

Good Times

We headed over the pass this morning for breakfast at the Bunnery in Jackson. Still great after all these years! Downtown was hopping with an art show and the market, and government spies in shades were photo-bombing the Jim and Sandy obligatory under the arches shot.

Coming back up the pass into Victor we stopped for huckleberry shakes at the Emporium (mandatory tourist stuff) and then a pose with the big spud (again, mandatory).

Jimmie bought a pellet gun at the Emporium so we went back home and shot guns while the ribs simmered in the background wrapped up in tin foil in the slow cooker.

I called our local fire department and told the captain we were fire-pitting tonight, he took our address in case the neighbors called and said have a good time! Click below…

Jackson Hwy

The scenery is transitioning along the Old Jackson Highway. I’m glad this original route to Jackson, Wyoming is still on my route as an alternative to the main road. I like to drive slow and take shots from the bus.

Yellowstone Drive

Jim and Sandy drove to Yellowstone today, despite the fact that it’s the coldest day of the season so far, and a tour bus to the park was canceled this morning due to snow.

Steph loaned her camera to her sister Sandy, and she took some nice shots, along with a video of Old Faithful. Click below to blow…

Company

Stephs sister Sandy and her husband Jim are at the house for a couple of days and Steph whipped up fried chicken and mashed potatoes for dinner. I do most of the dishes around here and our little manual system was a bit overwhelmed tonight.

Pictures of Sandy and Jim? Hey, we got time, firepit Saturday is coming up :-)

Air Planes

Our airport here in Driggs is very cool! It has a world class runway constructed with stimulus dollars that can handle the rich mans jets, a great restaurant called the Warbirds which feeds the rich and the locals taste, and a Museum full of cool vintage planes. Driving down Hwy 33 you often see an old plane or two hanging out on the tarmac strutting their muscle and vintage style. Today I pulled over and stuck my camera lens through the fence and took a couple of shots.

The jet was easy to identify by it’s numbers, it’s an A4D Skyhawk owned by a guy down in Wilson and probably stored here for his occasional joyride. I had to dive into the Teton Aviation site to identify the old Navy prop plane, called the Albatross.

Cemetery Shade

I was driving out on Bates Road this afternoon looking for some shade to park my bus under, and take a quick break. This is farming country and shade trees are hard to find but I spotted some up on a hill just off the highway so I headed up there.

Cedron Cemetery is one of the oldest in the valley and graves with 1800’s on them are plentiful. I noticed they’ve added a whole new section with a nice little road and that’s where I found my shade.

I guess if your body has to spend time somewhere before it turns to dust, this ain’t bad…

Stations

I’ve added a new function to my StateTown app, called Stations (4th row, 3rd from left). It’s a compliment to my other city specific weather functions, providing airport and weather station data and links.

Falling

It begins again. First one clump of leaves, then a whole tree. Before long the lawn is covered by fallen leaves and they have to be gathered up and removed before winter turns them into mouse houses.

… at least the back forty has been whacked down to size.

Lucy

Lucy is our 1987 Mazda 626 LX. The LX stands for luxury and that she has been with her power windows and electric sunroof. This vehicle has been in the family forever. I bought her from my sons mom many years ago after I wiped out on my motorcycle, and rejuvenated her with some major work.

This great old vehicle has played a pivotal role in my life. It continues to get Steph to work winter after winter and has almost 300,000 miles on her!

I’ve been struck lately by her fading paint, it’s almost like us humans losing our hair and going grey. Rust is happening everywhere and the power equipment that kept her windows up, is failing, but this bad-ass old girl keeps rocking on. (Click photo for more).

Clear

Family is coming to town next Thursday evening, leaving Sunday, and I’ve grabbed the forecast. Looks great! There’s nothing better than 70° weather high in the Rockies.

Sun Tip

I pull into our base every morning at 7:20 and I’ve noticed that the sun is coming up directly behind the tip of The Grand that’s visible from the yard. This morning I spotted a lone cloud hovering at the top and there was not another single cloud in the sky.

My sister spotted a UFO hiding behind a similar cloud up there a while back, and you’ve got to wonder about this one…

Firepit Path

Steph’s sister Sandy and her husband Jim (Tori’s mom and dad) are visiting us soon and our firepit is at the top of the list for entertainment. Unfortunately, a swath of dead weeds covered the back forty between the lawn and the pit.

Our weed whacker has been a bit whacked lately due to the fact we haven’t serviced the poor thing in years but Steph managed to cut a path out there. I just put a new spark plug in and Steph cleaned the filter but I think this is all we’re going to get until it gets a professional service.

Meanwhile, the lawn’s looking good! Clover mowed, mushrooms eaten (click photo).

Update: It appears that our whacker maintenance worked! Stephs out there now, wiping clean the whole back forty. Meanwhile, I’m doing my part by documenting the event :-)
