Del Mar

It was 98 degrees as I pulled out of Lake Havasu City Arizona at 0430, determined not to stop until I found a stretch of land not comprised of sand and sagebrush. I think I overdid it because I just now ran out of land.

The homeless couple who visit Teton Valley in the summer told me to forget San Diego as a starting point for my cruise up the coast. They suggested La Jolla, so that’s where I went.

A pretty place, but crazy. Maybe I’m not acclimated to Southern California yet but four-way stops with a lot of people crossing all directions just doesn’t work, and I’m just an old Idaho guy who yields to pedestrians instead of using them as target practice.

Speaking of traffic, I-5 was quite entertaining. I hung out in the outside lane doing 65 and watched the show. They drive real fast and aggressive, cutting each other off constantly, like this is just the way they drive here.

Anyway, it turned out I couldn’t find the Coast Highway from La Jolla so I moved North to Del Mar. A few things I observed: The beaches cost $7 dollars to use, per vehicle, and there were a ton of people paying that fee. The drive is tortuously slow with ill-planed stop signs and very long lights. Holy traffic issues, Batman.

Tomorrow, visiting grand-daughter Shelby :-)

  1. I love the way you write! Your words and your stories all flow. You make it very easy for someone to imagine they are right there with you, on your trip. Give Shelby the biggest hug for me and tell her I will be with you on your next trip to California to see her :-)

  2. We always had to pay to use the beaches. Silver Strand was our beach of choice. Had lots of fun there. Belmont park was another hang out of mine. You missed a lot not hitting San Diego, my land of missing. That’s where my husband was born and raised. I have family down n that area.

  3. My goodness how time flies! I think the last time I saw Shelby was in Merced (???) and she was a young girl. Now she’s a young woman. Oh, am I feeling old. A “Hello,” to Shelby, although, she may not remember me.

  4. That would be Oakdale, and yes, I’m heading your way! Tomorrow, Secret Beach with layover in Monterey. Tuesday is Santa Cruz and then your place in the City. I’ll call to confirm if that works. Tomorrow I turn 66 and I’m visiting Secret Beach where the bulk of my ashes are to be tossed into the ocean after I die. It’s getting weird Skoge…

  5. Happy birthday and we’ll look for you Tuesday or Wednesday. My Grandmother used to say, “Getting old ain’t for sissies!”

  6. I had a dialysis lady that I used to transport three days a week. She always said “Never get old”. She died one day when she refused to go.

I view life as an adventure that I am pleased to be a part of. Why I am still here boggles my fading mind. I believe in divine intervention and the fact that I have a guardian angel! I have encountered flying saucers, ghosts and demons in my life. What’s next?
