TomTom

My new WalMart GPS arrived today and I like it! It replaces a Garmin that really let me down last Summer, which caused me to travel blind around the U.S. on vacation.

The problem with the Garmin was the custom car adapter that broke because it was hard-wired to the plug and just wore out. I replaced it with an adapter bought on-line which had the wrong pin assignments, which fried the GPS.

This new TomTom is a WalMart special, in fact you can’t even find the model at the TomTom online store. It was $70 and arrived here at $80 after tax and shipping.

It’s menu is simpler than the Garmin, and easier to get around. It’s currently sitting next to me downloading the current maps, which is unlimited (the Garmin is not…). The number one thing I like so far is that the connection to the car adapter is a USB cable! If it wears out I’ll just replace the cable.

I’m taking off Friday on a little jaunt and I’ll report back here on how it works.

  1. Have a great trip. Wish you could see our new house in Petaluma. Big, huge house, enough for all our stuff that crowded the SF place, in 2000 sq ft of space.

  2. That’s great news Skoge! You guys got the move done and you’re finally out of the City. Not that the City is bad, I know you loved it there, but now you can breathe!
