Valentine Treats

The Valentine treats were flying off the bus today, fast and furiously, into the hands of smiling kids. I’m into day two of the handout and 40 treat bags are now down to 8. It’s going to work out perfectly as I’ve still got a few Head-Start and Comm School kids left.

We kept the sweets to a minimum this year and Steph did another masterful job with this little creation. I took one apart today, just to show it off to you…

There’s a card from Bus Driver Jim along with a treat in the envelope, and various Valentines stickers in the little box.

My View

The view from my mobile office changes dramatically from day to day but some things are constant. Every weekday afternoon I’m parked facing the exit from the Victor Community School. I get here early to snag this spot so I don’t get caught up in traffic.

I was struck this afternoon by the beauty and coolness of this little dead-end street in Victor so I pulled out my camera and took this shot through the windshield of my bus.

Being Piper

Being a cat, especially in this household, is a pretty good life. You can soak up the sun in a temperature controlled environment and not venture outside unless you want to.

You don’t have to work, you have human servants to feed you, brush you and clean your litter-box, and you can sleep when and where you choose to.

If you get sick you’re taken to the doctor, get fixed up, and the humans pay for it! There are no other responsibilities except to purr when you’re being loved on…

If I re-incarnate, please let me be a Piper!

Round Two

Ahh, nothing like a weekend to surround yourself with your favorite things! How about a hot lemon honey and brandy to start your Saturday off. Or two or three…

It guarantees you ain’t going anywhere, and it allows you to stay in your pajamas, robe and slippers. What could be better?

A bullet to the head would be good, but way too permanent.

Local Driving

As a professional driver who spends the day dealing with locals and tourists out on the road, I see it all. From the non-English speaking woman who was afraid to turn on a flashing yellow last week because she didn’t know what it meant, to the obvious texting person all over the road yesterday, to the brain dead woman I encountered today.

The roads were clear and dry heading south on Hwy 33 to Victor. I knew something was up as the line of traffic was doing 30 in a 55. One by one vehicles were passing the offending culprit up ahead. This is a dangerous two lane busy highway and everytime you’re forced into passing, you’re endangering everything.

Finally it was my turn. It was a small black sedan with local plates and I had a nice clear road ahead. I pulled up next to the vehicle to access the situation. A woman in her thirties, both hands on the wheel, staring straight ahead. Why was she doing 30 in a 55?

I then did something I never do, I laid on the horn! Her head turned my direction and her jaw dropped. It was a pathetic deer in the headlights look and all I can assume is, she must of been stoned, thinking she was really doing 55.

Driving on a busy highway like this is a responsibility everyone should take seriously. It pisses me off that so many people around here just don’t get it…

Purse Dump

Steph dumped her purse out on the counter to look for something last night. Not bad, I’ve seen much worse from her, and other purses from the same gender over the years.

Women use their purses to catch stuff that flows into their lives daily. When they need something, everything is emptied out, and the digging begins.

Men are different, we tend to organize better. I have a Craftsman tool bag that stands upright nicely and has lots of pockets to hold my stuff. My niece calls it my man purse. I can’t imagine dumping it out on the counter…

Dorothys Road

Dorothy is a born and raised here Valley Matriarch that I drive into town weekly to get her hair done. She owns a small house that resides on her sons vast cattle ranch at the foot of the Big Hole mountains. Dorothy and her husband were Mormon ranchers and they handed the operation down to their son.

The road to her house can be pretty dicey, especially after a fresh dump of powder. This morning it was simply calm, crisp, cold and compact.

We chatted on the way in about the perils of growing old (she’s 84) and the pressures put on her to give up the house and just be taken care of. Dorothy is as tough as this place is pretty and she will resist that to the very end.

Here’s a bouncy, deer chasing drive down Dorothys Road video.

Stupid Ho

Riley and I were discussing American Idol recently, he’s watching it and I’m not. I told him it had finally Jumped the Shark! Ok, add my son to the list of people who didn’t know what that meant, as I’m sure there are a few of you out there.

Jumping the Shark occurs when a TV show reaches it’s stupid point and there’s no recovery, with cancellation eminent. It’s happened many times to many TV shows over the years since 1977, when Fonzie jumped the shark tank on Happy Days.

Here’s a short clip of the actual Jump that was preceded by twenty minutes of Fonzie approaching the ramp, with hundreds of people on the shore stressing out.

So how has Idol jumped? Let’s start with the Stupid Ho, Nicki Minaj. This ignorant, no talent entity has produced lyrics like This and videos like This.

Then, there’s the bulbous Mariah The Diva Carey, Keith No Chest Urban and Randy I’m sorry dawg, it just didn’t work for me Jackson.

Maybe the shark will eat them quickly and put them out of their misery.

Paperwhites

These plant things have been sitting in a pot next to the sink for a while. They were bulbs given to Steph by her co-workers for Christmas. She stuck them in dirt, watered them, and they’ve been growing daily. Tonight they were making their presence known!

This is what they look like bloomed

Flat Screen

I was feeling sort of technologically challenged yesterday. That’s not good for a guy that’s been in the computer business since 1969 and thinks that he’s pretty hot stuff when it comes to all things technical.

The pathetic little old tube TV that I stole from Steph’s VCR watching setup was cutting off content. The quality was good for a tube, just small. My daddy always said never have a TV smaller than your computer monitor…

The Super Bowl was coming up so I bit the bullet and we drove to Walmart and I bought a new TV. I wanted something mid-sized that wouldn’t overwhelm my office and I settled on the 32 inch Samsung 4003 LED, for just $300 out the door. The Super Bowl is about to start, and I’m very pleased with the setup. Go Niners!

Impassable

I mentioned recently that our front porch was snowed in, and now it’s just hammered. The sun has warmed the roof and the snow has hit the ground.

There really is a front porch and a door there, just past the garages window pane…

Ice Cream Sandwich

I was in the turn-around approach to the Victor Community School yesterday when I saw this. These teachers, and their students, play on a different level. You wouldn’t see this kind of creativity at the public schools!

Pipers Journey

We’ve all heard those great stories about pets becoming separated from their owners and despite all odds and great distances, manage to make it home again.

That happened with us this morning as Piper walked out to the edge of the driveway in the blowing snow and bitter cold. We were afraid we had lost her forever! Yet thanks to her instincts and an amazing sense of direction, she managed to make it back home.

Then she went around the corner to get in the front door, which is snowed in. I guess she forgot. Sigh…
Thank god she’s home!
